Which contraception method is right for me?

Your age, medical health, BMI (body mass index) and personal preference all affect the type or contraception available to you and what is right for you.

There are 11 reversible forms of contraception available for women. Some very well known such as pills and implants and other not so much such as female condoms, vaginal rings and also calendar planning. As well as the 11 methods there are also some irreversible methods if you are sure this is the right choice for you.

A summary of all of them plus some permanent contraception options can be found on the nhs website here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/

We strongly advise you to research into each method, understanding how it works and any possible risks and side effects so you can make an informed choice.

Broadly contraception for women can be split into two categories. Hormonal and non hormonal.

All methods apart from the calendar tracking method do one of the following: Alter hormones to suppress, delay or prevent ovulation, change the environment in cervix to prevent sperm from reaching the egg or to survive, stop the egg from attaching, or act as a physical barrier between the sperm and the cervix.

Some methods such as the coils (hormonal and non-hormonal) and the implant last for 3-5 years and you do not have to take further action or care. Other methods such as the pill (combined and progesterone only) must be taken orally daily with a week break each month.

This is also an important factor to consider. Ultimately there are many choices and after doing your own research we recommend you speak to your GP or visit your local family planning clinic who can guide you further.

Good luck!
